Everyone knows that the foods you eat, the supplements you take and the exercises you do (or don't) can have a significant impact on your health. But did you know that your genes play a role as well?
In recent years, scientists have discovered that small variations in your genes can influence how well your body metabolizes food, uses nutrients, and cleanses damaging toxins. This interaction between genes, diet and lifestyle is referred to as nutrigenetics – the study of nutrition and genes.
Variations in genes can impact how we respond to our environment. For example, approximately one-third of the US population has a variation in a cholesterol metabolizing gene which means that they are much more sensitive to high levels of saturated fats and cholesterol in their diet. Approximately half of the US population has a variation in a detoxification gene, which can be supported by consumption of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, a rich source of a very important detoxifying compound called sulphorophane.
Since your genetic makeup is fixed at birth and will not change, if you are found to have a specific variation that can be impacted by your lifestyle you may choose to alter certain elements of your diet or lifestyle to help approach your health and well-being goals.
Your body's unique makeup provides clues to achieving optimal health and wellness with a diet and lifestyle plan that is distinctive and personalized to you.
